Korean Sunscreen vs. European Sunscreen: Why the Texture Is So Different
Ask anyone who has switched to Korean sunscreen why they did it and you will hear the same answer: it does not feel like sunscreen. No white cast, no heavy film, no stinging eyes – and still SPF50+. Here is what is behind that, and how to pick the right one.
The same protection, a different priority
Korean sunscreens sold in Europe carry the same SPF and UVA standards as European products. The difference is in what the brands optimise for. In Korea, sunscreen is worn every single day, indoors and out, by people of all ages. So the texture has to be good enough to wear daily – which means watery gels, serum-like lotions and sticks you can reapply over makeup.
What PA++++ means
Next to SPF (UVB protection) you will see PA followed by plus signs. It is the Asian rating for UVA protection – the rays responsible for pigmentation and ageing. PA++++ is the highest grade, and it is the standard on almost every Korean sunscreen we carry.
Skincare inside the sunscreen
Most Korean sunscreens double as a moisturizer: rice extract and probiotics in Beauty of Joseon, hyaluronic acid in Isntree and Torriden, birch sap in Round Lab, centella in SKIN1004. That is why many people skip a separate morning cream.
Which one for your skin
- Oily or combination: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh or Isntree Watery Sun Gel.
- Dry: Round Lab Birch Juice Sun Cream or Torriden Dive-In Sun Cream.
- Sensitive or redness-prone: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics or COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream.
- On the go: a sun stick such as Torriden Dive-In Sun Stick for reapplying over makeup.
