Every year around the end of September the same thing happens in our shop in Seiersberg: customers who were perfectly happy with their routine in summer come in and say their skin suddenly feels tight, looks dull or shows flaky patches around the nose and mouth. Nothing is wrong with the products – the air has changed. Cooler outdoor temperatures plus the first days of heating indoors pull water out of the skin faster than it can replace it. The fix is not a new ten-step routine. It is four small swaps.

1. Cleanse gentler, not harder

A foaming cleanser that felt refreshing in July is often the first thing that starts to sting in October. Switch the morning wash to water only or a cleansing milk, and keep the foam for the evening. Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleansing Milk removes sunscreen without stripping; SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Gentle Cleansing Milk is the choice if your skin also gets red. If you double cleanse, an oil cleanser such as Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil does the heavy lifting so the second step can be mild.

2. Layer hydration instead of one thick cream

This is the part of Korean skincare that makes the biggest difference in autumn. Instead of one heavy cream, apply two or three thin, watery layers on slightly damp skin: a hydrating toner, then an essence or ampoule, then the cream. Each layer holds the one below it. Good toners for this are Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Toner and Anua Rice 70 Glow Milky Toner, which is a little richer. For the middle layer, COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence is the classic, and SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica First Ampoule combines hyaluronic acid with calming centella – currently 20% off in store and online.

3. Look for ceramides in your cream

Dry autumn skin is usually a barrier problem: the lipid layer that keeps water in has thinned. Ceramides are the lipids it is missing, so choose a cream that contains them rather than one that only adds more water. COSRX The Ceramide Skin Barrier Moisturizer is our first recommendation for combination skin, and Dr. Althea 147 Barrier Cream for skin that is dry and sensitive. If your skin is red and reactive rather than flaky, Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream is the one customers come back for.

4. Keep the sunscreen, change the texture

UV does not stop in October, and UVA – the part responsible for pigmentation – is almost as strong in autumn as in summer. What you can change is the texture: swap a mattifying gel for a moisturizing formula. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics and Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Cream both feel like a day cream and sit well under makeup.

Two extras for very dry weeks

What to pause

If your skin is flaking, pause exfoliating acids and retinol for two weeks and let the barrier recover first. Bring them back one at a time, two or three evenings a week. Adding actives to already dry skin is the most common autumn mistake we see.
